Serving Up Hot Meals and Warm Conversation
When Jesus walked the earth, He had this way of seeing people – seeing beyond the obvious challenges they faced and ministering to their hearts. Those in our community who are under-resourced have very real practical needs, especially in the current economic climate. Ventura Missionary Church’s volunteers for Family to Family go beyond providing a hot meal for the hungry every month, they serve it up with love, compassion and warm conversation.
Family to Family is a local, all volunteer organization that has been feeding and helping others in Ventura since 1983. They offer hot, nutritious meals to those who come to the West End kitchen. Ventura Missionary Church adopted the fourth Monday of each month decades ago, serving the community on the Avenue rain or shine.
Lori Franco has been spearheading volunteer efforts, and has roughly ten consistent volunteers, who faithfully serve those who come for a meal. Lee is someone who recently returned to the Ventura area, and he didn't waste any time jumping in. He is a "regular!" Carrie has been volunteering since January, saying that her own mom's heart for those in need was a huge influence in her desire to help the homeless. Carrie's children often come to help, following the legacy of service that has been passed down through generations. Bernice has been a faithful servant with Family to Family for over 5 years! She says this is just one way that she is able to serve the community and the Lord. A Ventura Missionary local outreach partner, Casa de Vida, has been helping with this effort, too!
Volunteers currently make 100 burritos, pairing them with salad, and chips and salsa. They graciously serve drinks to those eating in the dining hall, and many volunteers love to sit and have conversations with those who are eating, making sure they not only eat a hot meal that day, but that they feel loved, valued, and seen. As guests leave, they are greeted at the door with a smile and heartfelt goodbye.
